The Our Digital Ancestors project is a project by Caring for God’s Acre funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. One of the key aims of the project is to equip volunteers and communities across England with the skills to record the the memorials in their burial ground and tell the stories of the people they commemorate. We are running this online course as part of the project to maximise the number of people and communities we can support. This course is free and open to anyone- some of the resources are more tailored to English burial grounds, but will still be useful if your site is in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland or outside of the UK.
The main Our Digital Ancestors Course contains 4 modules:
- Burial Ground Health and Safety
- Memorial Photography skills
- Memorial recording skills
- Researching people from your burial ground
This course is compatible with the AG Intl Burial Ground Management System, but you don’t need to be using this software to record your burial ground.
There is also a separate course on how to use the AG Intl Burial Ground Management System. The first 2 lessons of the course cover using the public portal to explore a map and the remaining lessons are for those who have access for adding information to the system.
These online courses include written tutorials as well as videos and photos to help you learn. You can test your knowledge with quizzes and earn certificates for completing them.
Support is available through the forum, by booking one-to-one or group support sessions and by emailing us.
